Tyscot Records took home three Gospel Music Association Dove Awards at this week’s 47th annual ceremony that took place at the Allen Arena in Nashville. Tyscot co-founder Dr. Leonard S. Scott and his son Bryant Scott (Tyscot President) were on hand to accept the GMA’s Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of the company’s 40th anniversary. “It’s really something when you get an award for something you just love to do,” Dr. Scott said in his acceptance speech. “Gospel music has always been a joy and it’s a privilege … to be able to support such powerful singers and musicians, anointed people of God who are going out and spreading the gospel and touching lives.”
“I want to thank my father for believing in me when God spoke to me at the age of 19 and said don’t go to dental school but help your father,” Bryant Scott humorously told the laughing audience when he stepped to the podium. “He could have told me to go on [elsewhere] so I could make some money but he allowed me to step into my true calling.” The calling paid off and Tyscot is now the No. 1 independent gospel label in the business.
Tyscot’s Anthony Brown & group therAPy performed an electrifying arrangement of its No. hit “Worth” on the show that aired on the TBN cable network. The group also won two of the four Dove Awards it was nominated for including Traditional Gospel Album of the Year for their No. 1 project “Everyday Jesus.” In accepting the statuette, Brown humbly remembered attending the Dove Awards a few years ago. “Nobody knew my name and it didn’t matter,” he said. “I was just happy to be in the room. So to be able to stand here tonight is just such an honor.”
Tyscot artist and social media maven Briana Babineaux (she’s got almost a half million Instagram followers) was backstage during the show chatting with artists such as Tamela Mann and capturing “Story” moments for the GMA’s Instagram page.
Her No. 1 debut album “Keys To My Heart” was also nominated for a Dove Award.
The Indianapolis-based firm is the oldest-existing black gospel recording label in the USA. Dentist Leonard S. Scott and his nephew Craig Tyson founded it in 1976. They originally ran Tyscot out of Dr. Scott’s dental office. Tyscot introduced the world to gospel stars such as John P. Kee, Deitrick Haddon, Vashawn Mitchell in the past and Casey J, Briana Babineaux and Anthony Brown & group therAPy recently. “Feel Good! 40 Years of Life Changing Music” is a new compilation album of some of Tyscot’s greatest hits over the last four decades.
