Gospel Legend Cissy Houston Passes Away at 91

Cissy Houston, the Grammy Award-winning gospel singer and matriarch of one of music’s most iconic families, passed away on October 7, 2024, at the age of 91. She died peacefully at her home, surrounded by loved ones. Houston’s powerful voice and incredible legacy have left an indelible mark on the music industry, as well as the hearts of many who cherished her contributions to gospel and soul music.

Born Emily Drinkard on September 30, 1933, in Newark, New Jersey, Houston grew up in a musical family and began her career singing gospel music in church. She first rose to prominence in the 1960s as part of the vocal group The Sweet Inspirations, known for their soulful harmonies and dynamic performances. The group famously provided background vocals for several legendary artists, including Aretha Franklin, Elvis Presley, and Dionne Warwick, who was Houston’s niece.

While her contributions to mainstream music were notable, it was gospel that truly defined her career. Cissy Houston’s unmistakable voice, often described as both powerful and emotive, earned her a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album in 1996 for her album Face to Face.

As the mother of the late Whitney Houston, Cissy’s influence on the music world extended to the next generation. Whitney Houston became a global superstar, and Cissy remained a constant guiding force in her daughter’s life, both personally and musically. Their deep bond was evident through the years, and Cissy continued to honor Whitney’s legacy after her tragic passing in 2012.

Beyond her musical achievements, Cissy Houston was known for her strength, faith, and resilience, especially as she navigated the personal challenges in her family. She was deeply devoted to her church, New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, where she remained active throughout her life.

She is survived by her son, Michael Houston, her grandchildren, and a host of extended family members and loved ones. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
