For many, the July 4th weekend was a time of relaxation or catching up with family and friends. For Anthony Brown & group therAPy, however, this past weekend was one they’ll remember for the rest of their lives.
The group is still beaming with excitement from their recent performance at the 2013 Essence Music Festival. As part of the Get Lifted All Star Gospel Tribute to Tramaine Hawkins and Donnie McClurkin, Anthony Brown & group therAPy showcased their incredible harmonies to an anticipating audience.
The crowd was moved by the group’s breathtaking renditions of “Great Is Your Mercy” and “All We Ask”. At the special request of Pastor McClurkin, Anthony Brown & group therAPy ended their set with a lively performance of their hit single “Testimony”. This song got everyone in the arena on their feet, dancing and singing along with the hook: “Can’t nobody praise Him like me, Can’t nobody praise Him for me. He gave me the victory and now I gotta (I gotta)TESTIMONY”.
According to group leader Anthony Brown, this experience has definitely left an impact on the group.
“The Essence music festival was an amazing experience. I can remember hearing about it for years. So to have the opportunity to share on the stage my first time there was mind blowing,” said Brown.
Backstage, Anthony received a special endorsement from none other than Kirk Franklin. He shared his admiration for the group’s talent stating: “Anthony Brown & group therAPy…they got…they got next…we bow out”. He went out to speak about the group’s sound referring to it as ’21st Century Christian Music’.
For Anthony, this tribute was more than just honoring the artist, Donnie McClurkin but saying a public thank you to an earlier supporter of his ministry.
“Pastor Donnie Mclurkin has been such a staple in gospel music and one of the most distinct vocalists of our generation. He has influenced my music greatly and supported me and group therAPy from the moment “Testimony” came out. He even gave me the opportunity to be on TBN on two separate occasions. So, when I got the call to honor him for the Essence Tribute, it was a no brainer. He deserves it and it was an honor to celebrate him with all the other artists and supporters of his ministry. No one sings like Donnie Mclurkin!!” said Brown.
