McClure, who is also a minister at New Life Worship Center in New Haven, was drawn to music and singing at the precocious age of seven. When he was 12 years old, he led his first song – “Jesus is Calling You “– backed by the church youth choir. “I was always very moved by music and the passion that singers had, especially singers like James Moore who was a huge inspiration,” says the singer. “I knew this was my calling and that I actually wanted to DO this, the first time I heard my family sing ‘Change’ by Walter Hawkins.”
Over time, McClure refined his craft and developed a vocal style that merged traditional Gospel, jazz and soul/r&b. His artistic influences include Carl Thomas, Doobie Powell, Kim Burrell, and Kervy Brown (Hezekiah Walker’s Love Fellowship Choir). His ability to sing with palpable conviction, coupled with his range, riffs, and overall approach, have made McClure an artist known for delighting audiences whether in a church, a stadium or on a national television broadcast. From GMWA to BET’s Bobby Jones Gospel, David McClure has left his impassioned vocal imprint on legions of Gospel music fans.
Though he is most known for singing with JJ Hairston & Youthful Praise, McClure has also provided background vocals for gospel greats such as Kim Burrell, Doobie Powell, Donnie McClurkin, Marvin Sapp, Dorinda Clark Cole and his inspiration – the late great James Moore. He also has sang background for pop superstar John Legend. The advice he received from all of these heavyweights is to stay humble and maintain a sense of integrity.
With this advice in mind, McClure pours every bit of himself into his music ministry and stays focused on conveying a message of hope, encouragement and salvation. His passion for Christ, and his heart for people are his motivating factors.
