Gospel Recording Artist James Fortune and his wife, Cheryl Fortune, are being sued for an incident that occurred in 2001 involving James and his stepson, who is Cheryl’s biological son. James is accused of allegedly burning the child, leaving him disfigured with second and third degree burns on a majority of his body.
According to the civil lawsuit, James picked up the child from school and the teacher claimed he misbehaved in class. James took the child home, scolded and berated him, then prepared an extremely hot bath for the boy. He then told the four year old toddler to remove his clothes before whipping him and pushing him into the scalding hot water, causing the burns and disfigurement of his body.
The young child was flown to a nearby hospital, however, they said the damage was too extensive and he had to be flown to another hospital that specializes in burns. He was permanently disfigured from the incident and had to undergo numerous skin grafts to most of his body.
Charges were filed against James at the time of the crime and in 2003 he plead guilty to Felony Injury to a Child and received six years deferred adjudication. The child, who was four at the time, is now 15 years old, and his biological father is responsible for the lawsuit, suing the Fortunes for 5 million dollars. The money is said to be to pay for the child’s plastic surgery as a result of the incident in 2001.
*Deferred adjudication: A form of plea deal where a defendant pleads guilty or no contest to criminal charges in exchange for meeting certain requirements such as probation or community service, which allows the defendant to avoid a formal conviction on their record or have their case dismissed. *
In regard to the current lawsuit, James had this to say, “I recently became aware of a civil suit pending against my wife, Cheryl Fortune and I, for an incident that occurred in 2001 involving my stepson. There was a criminal investigation and all matters were resolved in 2003. Since that time, my family and I, including my stepson, have continued with family traditions and always have a loving family environment. We are shocked by this lawsuit but understand people are free to use the court system to pursue claims, whether they contain merit or baseless matters. We are confident through this process, if it proceeds to a judge or jury, the ultimate decision maker will render a decision that is favorable to the circumstances and timing surrounding this situation. We believe in our American justice system and know it will work for us as it has for millions of other Americans. I love all my children, including my stepson, and I ask for your prayers as we deal with this matter privately. Thank you for your continued support for me, my family, and ministry.”

I believe that the punishment that was given was sufficient. I believe that at any time that plastic surgery was needed, CHERYL would have made sure her son had it done. I believe the biological father is thinking about nothing but money in his pocket now that the Fortune’s are reaping God’s blessings. I will continue to pray for this family that the child will get what he needs.

I do not think legal action, prior now, means the father is a gold digger or should have taken action sooner. At the time of the injuries, the child may not have been prepared for the extensive plastic surgery. Also, he may have been taking care of the medical, and now needs to be reimbursed.
The child is now a teenager, and not only is he burned physically, but mentally as well. Imagine his day to day from school to his personal life. His life has been severly altered becuase of uncontrolable anger. I can only imagine remarks from peers and even looking in the mirror daily questioning why it happened to him.
Put yourself in his fathers’ shoes. If another MAN burned your four year old son that YOU provided seed for, I hope to God you reap BLESSINGS too.
I wish the young man and his father MANY blessings. I hope he gets EVERY penny that he requests.

The sick monster should be under the jail. The low self esteem mom chose a man over he child. Now they want to child to recant the statement he pleaded guilty too. Moms are supposed to protect their children. The extreme abuse didn’t just start that day it was on going. Everything that is done in the dark comes to the light. All of the monsters money should be given to the stepson. He has life long injuries and life long emotional break downs that will come. Only an idiot would think the money was requested for the dad. The dad has been paying medical bills from the abuse for 11 years. He’s been trying to get the monsters to pay but they refused. So he let the world know about the true characters of the Fortunes. The pain of the skin graphs along is Warrented millions of dollars he did it to a four year old. The mom chose to stay with his abuser. So sick how low women sink just to keep a man. James Fortune is trying to manipulate & act like he is the victim. Both are nothing but wolves in sheeps clothing. The child is burned over 47% of his body. Second and third degree burns years of surgeries all at the hands of a man who sings the gospel. His punishment wasn’t enough. Both mom and stepdad should be under the jail. Child abuse is the charge. It doesn’t matter if it was 50 years ago the monsters should pay.
