Bishop T.D. Jakes, of The Potter’s House in Dallas, recently sat down for an exclusive interview with CNN’s Don Lemon. The interview addresses the impending divorce of Georgia televangelist Bishop Eddie Long, the Occupy Wall Street movement, and sex scandals that shook the nation recently.
In regard to Bishop Eddie Long’s divorce from wife Vanessa, Jakes says, “For people who are high-profile, like yourself, like me, him or others, it’s very difficult to maintain a private life when you are living in a fishbowl all the time. Sometimes you need to cut off all the lights and put your priorities back into alignment. And my prayers are that the Longs will use this opportunity to get that done.”
Eddie and Vanessa Long, the founding husband/wife team of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Atlanta, recently announced their plan to divorce. Subsequently, Eddie made an announcement that he is leaving the pulpit for a while, to focus on his personal life. Vanessa Long’s official statement said “After a great deal of deliberation and prayer, I have decided to terminate my marriage to Bishop Eddie L. Long.” Many speculate the divorce is due to Eddie being accused of having sexual relations with four young males, resulting in them being awarded a cash settlement.
“If there was actually misconduct, the young men involved in the case were old enough to make their own decisions. They are not juveniles,” he noted. “I think it’s a little different from a 10-year-old who can’t speak for himself,” Jakes said. “When you take these older boys, who can make decisions, old enough to drive a car, old enough to go to war, if there is a deliberate action done here, we can’t take a cash settlement if we really want justice done, because it leaves the public wondering what really happened.”

I disagree with Bishop Jakes. Besides that, I think that preachers like him and Creflo Dollar are simply trying to protect their empires too…because all their ministries are affected in some type way. Also, these major spokesmen like, Jakes, Dollar, and Osteen seems to be speaking on behalf of the entire church body–and this is not so. Their views on this issue and other issues are very distorted in terms of the Word of God. I am frankly sick and tired of them and others giving a free ticket to these persons who are taking advantage of people and God’s church–I don[t care who it is…this has to stop…and I believe God is going to intervene. Preachers, in particular should not be allowed to continue to perpetrate on their parishioners like they do by milking them of money and taking advantage of them in other ways as well. In my growing up in the church, I have seen it over and over and over again where the leaders, bishops, included are letting these unholy men and women get away with sins against God and His people. And, in 99% of the cases, the victim is always the accused and should not say any thing about anything…I have seen victims leave the church, when we as men of God should be trying to rescue the perishing. This is nothing new. I am 67, and have seen it all of my life. It is time to put a stop to listening to people like Jakes, etc. soften the affects of what these leaders have done when in most cases, it is obvious that they are actually sinners. Creflo dollar made a very confusing statement after the pay offs occurred when there were people who were trying to find refuge after their leader had sinned. What should have happened is that these leaders should have been trying to get him some help, and promoting a period of repentance–asking for forgiveness, etc. Bishop Morton was ostracized by many people, including clergy, like Bishop Jakes, who criticized him for openly confronting Long….after he refused to respond to phone calls, and offers for help. I am just sick of this trend. The Church is bigger than their “super star” leaders, and lastly, the victims should not be criticized, like Jakes alluded to in his statement, like “they were of age”…they were teens, who were perpetrated on by their leader. GOD BLESS THE CHURCH! And, may the Church continue to be a place of HEALING, DELIVERANCE, AND SALVATION!

I agree with Bishop Jakes. It is obvious that these guys had another agenda other than one they portrayed to the Media. I really doubt that they waited as long as without considering what type of financial gain they would inherit. The Bible says upon this rock I will build my church and the gates of Hell shall not prevail. These guys came against the Church of God. They will not prosper in any of their endeavors.

Even if that’s true, my sister, that still does not negate the fact, in any case, that a dastardly sin was committed by the bishop and these guys. I still think that blame should not only be cast on the boys, but also on the bishop as well.

I just love how the saints spew hate toward each other. This is common in the african american church. I’ve been in church all my life, and it really intrigues me how ministers down each other because of a difference of opinion. I totally agree with Bishop Jakes, and he’s never said Bishop Long should not be held accountable, he just used some decorum.

Unfortunately Black people have had to depend on the church for so long that they have become numb to using sound judgement. The photographs of Eddie Long were more than enough evidence that there was questionable behavior going on. I do not agree with TD Jakes. He answered the questions to be politically correct. He also continues to point at the victims and shed a bad light on them. What I don’t hear any of these so called leaders talk about is the seductive power they have over people who trust them These leaders realize that they are powerful, and that they can virtually jerk the emotions of people with their words. Those young men were surrounded by a huge camp of powerful, decision making homosexual men who have a practice of molesting boys. This is not a new phenomenon. (catholic priests) So as the young men realize for whatever reason, whether or not it was Eddie Long, or some other pervert, that it really wasn’t their idea in the first place to have some grown ass man as their first encounter with sex, anything can happen. Some victims become angry and it can take years before they say anything about what has happened to them. Other victims become complacent and become like their perpetrators. Also, in their so called churches, these so called bishops, and elders preach to their congregations about spirits. I havent heard one of them come forth and address the fact that homosexuality is a seducing spirit.
They teach their people not to judge, and to look the other way. Doesn’t the bible teach us that we are to judge the matters that we deal with, and that we will judge the angels as well? These leaders have bamboozled so many people and for the black congregations, kept Jim Crow alive and well by teaching their congregants to not judge. In essence, don’t think.
