Last Sunday (March 25th 2012), a number of Black majority churches from around the world participated in what they titled as “Hoodie Sunday” in support of Trayon Martin. “Hoodie Sunday” called for churches around the world to show their support for Martin, and the ongoing call for the arrest and prosecution of his killer (self-proclaimed “Neighborhood Watch” Captain George Zimmerman) by wearing a hoodie to church. The list of preachers who delivered their sermons wearing hoodies included Dr. Jamal Bryant (Baltimore, USA), Pastor E. Dewey Smith (Georgia, USA) Bishop John Francis (London, UK), Bishop Victor Couzens (Cincinnati, USA), Pastor Israel Phiri (Johannesburg, South Africa), amongst many others. According to a statement from Dr. Bryant, the “Hoodie Sunday” movement also went as far as South America and The Bahamas.
Martin was killed on Feb. 26. The shooting has set off what is now an international debate over race and justice. Trayvon’s family believes he was
killed in part because he was black. Zimmerman, whose father is white and mother is Hispanic, claimed self-defense, despite the fact that Martin was armed only with a bag of Skittles and a bottle of Arizona Ice Tea. He has not been arrested, though state and federal authorities are still investigating the situation. Since the date of the tragedy, thousands have joined in “hoodie marches” that have been held across the USA from Philadelphia (pictured right), to New York, to Houston, Texas. In addition, “Hoodie Sunday” participant Dr. Jamal Bryant and The Martin Family Attorney Crump are scheduled to lead an expected crowd of 15,000 people in yet another march calling for justice on Monday March 26th at 4pm EST in Centennial Park (Sanford, FL – the town where Trayvon was murdered).

Although the “hoodie” symbol of support has been embraced by an uncountable number of citizens across America, it has also attracted some criticism. Fox News Reporter Gerald Rivera said on Friday that the hoodie an unarmed black teenager wore when he was killed in Florida is as much responsible for his death as the man who shot him. “I’ll bet you money that if he didn’t have that hoodie on, that nutty neighborhood watch guy wouldn’t have responded in that violent and aggressive way,” Rivera said. CNN Contributor and Washington Watch Host Roland Martin speedily responded to Geraldo’s comments by saying, “This is what happens when we don’t confront the real problem; bigotry and racism. We blame the hoodie and not the hood rat that killed Trayvon”. In an interview with London-based Radio Host Ryan Jermaine Bruce (“Ryan J”), Roland further argued that “the problem is not a black kid wearing a hoodie, the problem is somebody thinking a black kid wearing a hoodie is a thug”.
Not only have black clergy and other supporters of Trayvon’s case embraced the “hoodie” movement, but a wide number of Gospel artists have also been participating by posting pictures of themselves in hoodies to their social media networks.

the Jakes Family all wearing hoodies for “Hoodie Sunday”. Although he has not been seen wearing a hoodie himself, Bishop Jakes released a statement regarding Trayvon Martin in the Huffington Post stating that he was “outraged” by the tragedy. “We must bring a righteous legal and satisfactory moral conclusion to this atrocious miscarriage of justice and violation of all reasonable consciousness” Jakes said.
It has become clear that while the public await the arrest and prosecution of George Zimmerman, (who has reportedly now gone into hiding after receiving death threats) the marches, rallies, and other cries for justice will undoubtedly continue in cities across the United States. “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” said Congressman Al Green, representing Texas’ 9th district concerning the case.
