After graduating from the University of Connecticut with a fine arts degree circa 1986, Carr was mentored by Richard Smallwood. He then began to play piano or organ for recording sessions by Tramaine Hawkins, Cassietta George and “Star Search” contestant, Beau Williams. Eventually, Carr became the music director for the legendary gospel artist, Rev. James Cleveland. Carr and his Kurt Carr Singers ensemble released their first CD, “Together,” in 1991. Since then, it’s been a steady ascension for the group that is known for its precision vocals, passionate stage presence and Carr’s seamless blend of new school gospel and old world classical. Along the way, Carr, who is currently producing a new CD for gospel’s First Lady Shirley Caesar, has picked up an armful of Stellar Awards, earned a Dove Award and been nominated for a Grammy Award.
