A huge part of Casey J’s appeal isn’t only her artsy hairstyle (a Mohawk medley with Senegalese twists), Bohemian clothes and her acoustic vibes but also her unique approach to worship music. Much of her sound is stripped down and centers on the acoustic guitar. Always looking for creative ways to express her love of worship music, Casey J recently came up with the idea of Pop Up worship concerts as a way to reach non-churchgoers.
“There are so many people who aren’t going to come to church on a Sunday morning,” Casey J says. “So, I was talking to God about it and He gave me this idea to do Pop Up worship concerts. So my guitarist Korey Bowie and I just go to a random park, announce it on Instagram the same day and whoever comes just comes. There’s no cost. It’s just like-minded people meeting to fellowship and sing. A lot of people who don’t even know we’re in the park will look and see what we’re doing and they’ll join in. We decided not to wait for the people to come to us but we decided to go to them. There’s no pressure to dress a certain way, you come as you are and we’re out in nature, which I love. Kids are playing and we’re just having a really cool worship experience. It’s really organic.”
The next Pop Up worship event takes place this Monday, August 31 @6:00 PM at Freedom Regional Park, 1900 East Boulevard, Charlotte, NC 28203. Top Ten gospel artist Travis Greene will be Casey J’s special guest.
