In case you missed it, an article was posted claiming that black pastors were encouraging their congregations to not vote in the upcoming election. According to Martin, this is completely false! After an evaluation of the misleading article, here’s what he had to say:
“When I first saw the headline, I was stunned, especially knowing the blood that has been shed over the years by African-Americans and others to gain the precious right to vote.
I read the more than 1,300-word story by Rachel Zoll, with a contribution from Bill Barrow. The first line was “Some black clergy see no good presidential choice between a Mormon candidate and one who supports gay marriage, so they are telling their flocks to stay home on Election Day.”
Nothing in the story legitimately backed up that first line. Anybody who had read the full article would know that.
In reading the piece, Zoll and Barrow quote or mention pastors A.R. Bernard, Jamal Bryant, George Nelson Jr., Floyd James, and Howard-John Wesley, Lin Hill and Dwight McKissic.
Not a single one of these pastors was quoted as saying they have or plan to tell their congregations not to vote in the presidential election. Not one.
Several expressed misgivings about President Barack Obama’s support for same-sex marriage, and others had negative thoughts about Mitt Romney being a Mormon or the effect of his policies on their congregants. One said he hasn’t decided whom he will vote for, and McKissic said he’ll go fishing on Election Day.
But not a one said they were telling their members not to vote.”

I did not see this article but heard this on the radio today. I listen to my own Pastor who does not agree with same sex marriage but believes that President Obama is doing what he has to do to win. I believe the media is doing whatever they can to discredit our President. He has my vote all the way no matter what.
I am so thankful that Roland Martin is articulate and insightful. I appreciate the dutiful manner that he uses to monitor and when necessary contradict the attempts of the antagonists of truth who seek to misrepresent the state of the African-American community in general and the African-American church specifically. While it is true that there will always be misguided and malcontent people who love and enjoy being irrationally contrary, such aberrancies to the norm must not be allowed to be the face of the whole set. It is impossible to agree with all of President Obama’s policies and opinions. He is after all a politician. However, without question his good far outweighs whatever discomfort most well-reasoned pastors would feel about the areas of disagreement. The American Political System does not allow anyone the luxury of successfully choosing a person with whom there are no problems. Neither can we afford to be so obstinate as to decide not to vote for the better of the two in order to lodge a protest on the areas of disagreement. Especially when the poorer of the two, Mitt Romney, is so obviously unqualified to hold such a critically and globally important office. The African-American community will recognize the wisdom of not biting the nose to spite the face, and will do the right thing and vote for our President – President Barack Obama.
Bravo to Mr. Martin, for amplifying truth & justice, and for exposing this one lie among many. Let us never rely on what others say and write to formulate our opinions/decisions – when we as knowledgeable citizens “live the truth” daily in America!
