Church Rapist Sentenced to Two Consecutive Life Sentences in DeKalb County
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, John Russell Carver, 51, plead guilty to raping a 53 year old woman inside of a church in DeKalb County. Back in February Carver went to St. Timothy United Methodist Church on Memorial Drive to ask for some assistance. The victim let him inside the church and that’s when he attacked her. He beat her, stomped on her head and with a knife in hand, raped her, according to District Attorney Robert James. He then took her cell phone which he later sold at Underground Atlanta.
The list of charges against Carver as a result of the incident includes rape, armed robbery, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, burglary and possession of a knife during commission of a felony, according to Erik Burton of the DeKalb County District Attorney’s office. Judge Asha Jackson sentenced Carver to two consecutive life sentences plus 115 years behind bars for the crimes.
“This was an extremely violent and vicious act,” District Attorney Robert James said. “He brutally attacked and raped a woman in a local church. Hopefully this guilty plea will bring resolve for both the victim of this crime and the community affected by this monstrous act.”
The Georgia Bureau of Investigations was able to connect Carver to the crime by using DNA after an extraneous search.
